How much is “X” worth, anyway?

If you are like me, you have a ton of vinyl lying around that you are trying to sell off. Well, if you are a friend of mine, you are probably tired of hearing me say, “hey, how much do you think “X” is worth?” This questions comes out of my mouth 5-6 times a month, I’d say. And I blast it on all my friends. Normally, I do the smart thing and check past ebay auctions. However, there are times when zero hits match. That’s no help.

Along comes popsike.com. Wow, this answers all those stupid questions. All you do is enter some keywords for the vinyl in question and boom! 2 seconds later, you get a list of previous ebay auctions spanning back to 2003 or earlier. Nice stuff here. If your vinyl isn’t worth more than $50, don’t bother. However, if you are looking for say, a Chain Crew, you’ll find at least 3 helpful auctions.

I’m psyched.

London Calling

Once upon a time, I woke up early in the morning and hit the gym with Cushman. As we were exiting the gym, a WPI custodian and fellow gym dude said, “Hey, did you hear? A plane just crashed into the world trade center.” We rushed home and sat glued to the TV for the rest of the day. I recall the second plane crashing. It was a horrible day.

For Londoners, a very similar occurrence went on today. In the morning rush hour, bombs went off in the Underground in 6-7 spots and at least one bus was bombed. Imagine waking up, going about your normal routine only to be shocked by a bomb. Sometimes life deals you the shittiest hand ever and you are forced to bring it to the river.

Today, my thoughts are with all Londoners. My thoughts are also with my cousin who is studying over in London. If you are a local, keep your head down, and know that we are thinking about you.

Calling all Java nerds …

Ok, if you are a nerd like me who codes in Java, you can relate to the following situation. You are compiling your code, or executing some software when BAM, an exception get’s thrown. Something is missing. You cannot dynamically locate a file. What the hell?!? Where is this file? The package isn’t one you’ve written. How the hell are you going to track it down?

Here’s the answer: Jarhoo. Jarhoo allows you to search an online database that maps classnames with jars, or jar files with packages, or jars with classnames. It’s an immense time saver. If you are that kind of nerd, this is definitely something you should have in your toolbelt.

As a future parent and a computer nerd, I’d like to point out an important resource

Begin Public Service Announcement

Is your Son a computer hacker? This was probably the best written article I have read in ages. It cuts the chase and lets parents know EXACTLY how hackers operate. I don’t have any children yet, but in 15 years or so, when I assume they would be old enough to HACK, I will closely monitor them for these signs. I understand that up to the age of 3 a pacifier is probably an acceptable device. However, if this behavior continues to the age of 4 or 5, I will most certainly be concerned that my child has already become a hacker. Such is life. Please read the article and share the link with friends and family.

End Public Service Announcement

“I have reviewed my computer and discovered filthy programs running amuck everywhere…Flash. MP3’s. DOS. BIOS.” Haha. This had me on the floor.
